What does an NR supplement do?

NR supplements provide nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3 that the body converts into NAD+. NAD+ plays an important role in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and cellular communication. Human studies consistently show that NR supplementation can raise NAD+ levels, although higher NAD+ does not automatically mean improved health, longevity or disease prevention.

What are the potential benefits of NR supplements?

Research suggests NR may support NAD+ levels and cellular function, while potential benefits for healthy ageing, cognitive function, cardiovascular health and physical performance are still being investigated. Results vary between studies, and many trials are relatively small or short-term. There is currently insufficient evidence to claim that NR extends lifespan or reverses ageing.

How much NR should you take each day?

There is no officially established recommended dose for NR. Most published research has used between 250mg and 1,000mg per day, with studies showing that these doses can raise NAD+ levels. Higher doses have also been tested in some safety studies, but there is no proven benefit to exceeding the amounts commonly used in research.

Are NR supplements safe?

NR has generally been well tolerated in human studies at commonly researched doses. Some people may experience mild nausea, headaches, fatigue or digestive discomfort, particularly at higher doses. Taking NR with food may help reduce gastrointestinal symptoms. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with chronic health conditions, and those taking prescription medicines should seek medical advice before using NR.
